Now fully refurbished, the Mound in Edinburgh is the corporate headquarters of the HBOS and incorporates four floors of banking offices and four basement levels.
Work on this Grade A listed structure which has dominated Edinburgh’s southern skyline for 200 years involved rationalising its interior and brining services up to 21st century standards.
Our works comprised the construction of new engineering brick lift shafts deep within the existing ‘maze-like’ building. We also completed various structural alterations.
The project involved replacement of nine lifts with a single duplex lift. First the existing shafts were demolished down to ground floor level. Then temporary steelwork was installed to support construction of the new shaft above, while demolition continued down to the 4th basement.
The below ground shaft was then built up to the underside of the steelwork and the weight of the shaft above transferred onto it.
